I love brunch. Why?
– It combines the best foods from breakfast and lunch.
– You can sleep late without missing it.
– For whatever reason, it’s totally acceptable to booze it up. Drunk at lunch? You need help. Drunk at brunch? Good for you!

One type of brunch I’ve had elsewhere that I’ve never had in Austin: a good, old-fashioned gospel brunch. I’ve been searching around town for a while now. (See my post on Strange Brew’s gospel brunch, which was really a bluegrass concert with breakfast tacos.)

Well, folks, I finally found one! Stubb’s offers gospel brunch twice every Sunday.

We sat out on the back porch, so we didn’t have a direct view of the gospel singers. But this actually turned out well because not only was it much quieter, but also we sat right next to the buffet/carving station.

You know the only thing better than tasty food? Tasty UNLIMITED food.

They’ve got your basic brunch staples: pancakes, bacon, eggs, and so on. Then they have lunch fare like fried catfish, enchiladas, and pecan pie. And, of course, they have BBQ brisket, sausage, and chicken. If you don’t leave feeling sick, you’re not doing it right.

So, they’ve got the “brunch” part covered. What about the “gospel”?

The music, which lasted from about 11:00-11:45, was great. The five singers were very talented and high-energy. Plus, it was proper gospel music– Jesus had a starring role (or at least a cameo) in every song. I’m pretty sure some of my sins were forgiven just from being in the proximity.

Stubb’s Gospel Brunch is just plain fun. I’d recommend it to brunch enthusiasts, gospel music enthusiasts, and anyone who wants a nice, unique way to spend a Sunday morning. It’s a bit expensive, but if you eat enough barbecue, you’ll probably get your money’s worth.

Helpful Tips:

  • Definitely, definitely make reservations in advance. It’s very popular.
  • Even if you make a reservation, get there at 10:30 (or 12:30, if you’re going to the 1:00 show). That way you have 30 minutes to eat/chat before the show starts.
  • The concert is by no means quiet. If you have sensitive ears, I’d request a table outside. NOT RECOMMENDED FOR THE HUNG OVER.
